What do Polarized Sunglasses do? What is Polarization?

What do Polarized Sunglasses do?

Polarization improves your ability to see without straining your eyes! The benefits of wearing polarized sunglasses include enhancing your vision and increasing visible detail all while blocking dangerous glare. At the Sunglass Garage, we truly believe in the technology behind polarization.

Glare: By definition, GLARE is what happens when light rays bounce off of any reflective surface. Most commonly, glare is caused by light reflecting off bright or flat objects like water, glass, snow, or roads. You’ve probably encountered glare while driving your car or boat. It can have a dangerous blinding or white-out effect!

Think of it this way… a pair of Polarized Sunglasses is kind of like wearing noise-canceling headphones. It blocks out all the unwanted interference. Your eyes can relax and you can see clearly. You’re not squinting or straining to see what’s in front of you.

Buyer Beware: Not all polarized lenses are created equal! And you definitely get what you pay for. Only premium brands use premium materials and technology. Upgrading to polarized lenses is worth the extra cost to prevent glare and eye fatigue.

We have an extensive assortment of Polarized Sunglasses – check them out!!

Did you know…Light reflecting off a flat surface magnifies up to 5 times normal light. This is why the effects of polarized light is so harmful. Polarized lenses from the Sunglass Garage will help protect your eyes against harmful blinding glare.

Did you know…The film and photography industry has been using polarized lenses for decades. They use polarized lenses in their cameras to make colors more rich and have deeper contrast.

Did you know…Over the last five years polarized is the fastest growing segment in eyewear.

Did you know…Glare can be almost completely horizontally polarized, depending on the height of the sun. All reflections from objects above water are partially polarized. With polarized sunglasses images appear more transparent!

Most water-based sports enthusiasts are now steering toward wearing Polarized Sunglasses. They are also becoming very popular with people who spend long periods of time driving. Delivery couriers and truck drivers find a great reduction in eye strain using polarized lenses. The Fishing Industry has also caught on to Polarized Technology... Most professional Fly-Fishermen, Deep Sea-Fishermen, and even High Altitude River Fishermen won't get on the water without a high quality pair of Polarized Sunglasses. Polarized technology makes all general outdoor activities easier on your eyes.

Polycarbonate Polarized: Electric's Polycarbonate Polarized lens combines the high performance material polycarbonate, with the glare reducing features of an optical polarized filter. Electric's injected PC polar lens achieves 99% efficiency in blocking polarized lightwaves. The polarized filter blocks light that can reflect off flat surfaces like water, snow, or asphalt. These PC polarized lenses block 100% of the sun's damaging UV rays, and provide exceptional glare reduction while maintaining excellent optical clarity.

Glass Polarized: Electric's Glass Polarized lenses offer the superior optical clarity of glass while achieving a 99.9% efficiency in blocking polarized light waves. The glass lens filter blocks light that can reflect off flat surfaces like water, snow or asphalt. Electric's glass lenses are manufactured in Italy with patented technology. At 2mm these tempered glass polarized lenses are half the thickness and half the weight of traditional glass polarized lenses.

Spy – Trident Polarized Lens Technology
All of Spy’s polarized sunglasses feature premium injected Trident lenses. Trident lenses diffuse glare through the use of an integrated polarizing filter layered within the injected lens, allowing incredible clarity even in the harshest conditions.

Spy's Polarized Trident lenses act like slatted window blinds—when light hits a reflective surface it bounces and scatters, reducing contrast and clarity. The “blinds” in these Trident lenses block scattered light rays but let in the “right” light, allowing you to see clearly and fight eye fatigue.

Trident Polarized lenses are of the highest quality available, and effectively eliminate more than 99% of blinding glare. Spy’s premium Trident polarized lenses will outlast and out-perform a typical polarized lens every day of the week (and twice on Sunday!).

VonZipper – Visual Phenomena Polarized
VonZipper offers two different types of polarized lenses to enhance your visual experience.
  1. Glass Polarized: The ultimate in visual clarity.
  2. Polycarbonate Polarized: Exceptional glare reduction at a price that your wallet will love.

Power to the pupils! It’s time to appreciate the power of VonZipper’s Visual Phenomenon Polarized. From the blazing brightness of glare off of the snow to the blinding reflection of the sun off the water’s surface, VZ uses the most progressive polarized technology available to protect your eyes from the dangers of UV rays and glare distortion. Squint no more! How does visual phenomena polarized work? Sunlight reflecting off surfaces like water, snow, sand, and pavement creates glare - distracting reflections that can obstruct your vision and strain your eyes. VonZipper polarized lenses feature a thin, glare-blocking polarization filter that only allows light waves to enter the lens at certain key angles - giving you the crucial optical clarity you need with none of the distorting glare. Combine this with unparalleled lenses, featuring superior distortion elimination and premium UV protection, and what do you get? More vivid colors and the ultimate in visual acuity - whether you’re trying to distinguish oncoming cars, check the surf, or schpock the lip of the kicker. You’re about to blow minds on. Visual phenomena polarized gives power to the pupils.

VonZipper’s premium glass polarized lenses are the culmination of their relationship with Barberini S.R.L., the most advanced developer of polarized technology. These lenses combine the optical superiority of glass with the skill and technical artistry it takes to block 99.9% of glare while maintaining true colors and ultra-sharp details. When considering all aspects of the construction process, VZ has struck a balance between computerized procedures for precise tolerances and the hands-on love and care that comes from hand polishing and finishing. First, two layers of glass are sandwiched around an ultra-thin polarized filter, add to that a scratch-resistant hard coating to protect the lens exterior from nicks and scuffs. Then two layers of anti-reflective coating are applied to the interior-surface, to protect your precious eyes from glare and fatigue. In other words, six layers of the highest level of optical technology allow you to see the world exactly how it is - whether it’s from the lawn chair, the chairlift, or the deck Of the S.S. Minnow. VonZipper glass polarized lenses have the superiority you can see.

Smith – Polarized Defense

Glare off of reflective surfaces decreases depth perception, reduces visual acuity, and causes eye fatigue. Smith Optics Polarized eyewear uses the highest quality polarized film in the world to filter out 99.9% of this visual static for maximum glare-free comfort. Exactingly pre-shaped in the manufacturing process and precisely aligned in the lenses, Smith polarized film is precisely aligned and pre-shaped in the manufacturing process so that it perfectly matches the curvature of our lenses when installed. Each Smith Optics Polarized lens is in fact two thin wafers of either Techlite glass or Carbonic lens material between which this high-grade polarized film is fitted, protecting it from the elements and ensuring distortion free polarization.

Smith Optics Polarchromic lens technology combines the benefits of glare obliterating polarization with the advantage of photochromic light sensitivity. Available in either Carbonic or Techlite glass, Smith Optics Polarchromic lenses automatically self-adjust their tint in response to ambient UV light conditions creating a tint level which is perfect at all hours of the day. These lenses retain their photochromic properties indefinitely, certainly outliving the life of the frame itself. Spanning a range of approximately 10%-35% VLT (Visible Light Transmission) Polarchromic lenses need only 10-25 seconds to fully transform from light to dark depending on UV light intensity. The result is a lens tint which is perfect at every moment of the day from dawn to dusk particularly at hours when the benefits of polarized are vital but the lens tint has to be light enough to see.
